After the defeat in the Sangrur bypoll, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday said the election results were contrary to the party’s expectations, but it accepted the mandate. Addressing a press conference here, AAP Punjab chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang congratulated SAD (A) candidate Simranjit Singh Mann on his victory and said AAP candidate Gurmel Singh lost in a very tough contest. Kang said AAP’s vote share in this election has decreased by only 2% as compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Whereas Akali Dal, Congress and BJP candidates have failed to secure their security deposit in the Sangrur bypoll. Elaborating further, Kang said that AAP got 34.65% votes, while BJP got only 9%, Congress 11% and Akali Dal got 6% of the total votes in this poll.
The vote share of Congress in 2019 Lok Sabha was 27%, in 2019 Akali Dal got 24% votes and which shows that people are no longer with traditional parties. Stating that the party is not afraid of defeat, Kang said, “We are among the people and will continue to work for the welfare of the people. The party has seen many such defeats in the past. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, we won in Delhi.” Didn’t get a single seat, but in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, we formed the government by winning 67 out of 70 seats.” Kang said the party was taking the results of the Sangrur bypoll very seriously. The party leadership will review it and consider it. The AAP leader cited low turnout in the bypolls as a major reason for his defeat. He said that lakhs of people did not cast their vote in the midst of the ongoing paddy sowing season and the scorching heat in Sangrur. “We will learn from this election and work harder for the welfare of the people. We will come back strongly,” Kang said.
