Chandigarh:

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly objected to the decision of the Central Government to convert Panjab University into a Central University. Addressing a press conference here, party’s chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang said that the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will not allow centralization of Panjab University at any cost. Kang said Chief Minister (CM) Bhagwant Mann had on Sunday written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking their immediate intervention in the matter. Kang said that CM Mann has strongly condemned the move of the government and has written to the Union Home Minister to stop any change in the nature and character of Panjab University.

Blaming the Congress and the Akali Dal for insidious policies and allowing the central government to weaken the PU, the Kang said that in 2008, former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal made PU a central university and even a higher education. As part of the treacherous Congress leaders had given their consent to convert. The Power Committee did not object to this proposal of the Center in 2021. He said that the Punjab Government bears 40 per cent of the financial responsibility by paying maintenance deficit grant to the University. Kang said the CM categorically stated that his government would never allow the BJP government to convert PU into a central university and the AAP government would submit its reply opposing the move in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 30. Kang said that PU is a university. Symbol of the heritage of Punjab and synonymous with the name of the state and youth not only from Punjab and Chandigarh but also from neighboring states get high class education from this institute.
